Hell freezes over: Sox ice historic Win in the Bronx

More power to the Red Sox Nation; they've earned this celebration by making the biggest comeback in Baseball post-season history. What makes this win that much sweeter is the fact that the Sox beat the Yankees in the bronx, the Yankees back yard. To break down the final four games, the Sox played better offensively and defensively against what I thought was a tired Yankees roster. What was also missing in the Yankees approach was the sheer unity and oneness of purpose that was evident in every Red Sox player who came on the field. They were fired up, they believed they had a chance and they plain took it. I'm not going to draw parallels between this and any other sporting effort, that would dilute the glory of this moment for all Sox fans.

I hope the Sox win the World Series and as much of a Yankees fan that I am, as much as it hurts that the Bombers aren't in the World Series, I'm darned happy for my friends who've made Boston their home. Go out guys, party and cheer your team on to what could be the final nail in the Bambino's coffin...

  1. what you read above is what I've heard a lot of today in one form or another from Yankee fans who previously had nothing good to say about the 'Sox. "We're happy for you....you played better...hope you go all the way...blah blah." This is all touching, but much different than yesterday when you heard "Bambino will make his appearance..." "history repeats" etc. But, you could also sense their nervousness yesterday - as if they felt they would regret their prognostications. Everything came crumbling down last night for Yankee fans and the back pedaling has begun in earnest after the worst choke in the history of baseball.

  4. There is so much evidence that the Sox haven't made it past Yankees stadium into the world series that some of the statements weren't unfounded. What can you say about Pedro Martinez giving up four runs in the 8th innning of last year's Game 7? I heard my friends from Boston say - ohh the curse has rared its head again - that's so lame - he just pitched like a dufus.

The Yankees have lost as they have in the past but they haven't blamed a curse or anything meta-physical - the blame falls squarely on the players on the roster. The reason people use phrases like the "Bambino will make his appearance" is that the Red Sox Nation is so relentlessly superstitious that its denizens can't accept that their team can be lacking in some respects - they always want to pin the blame on something intangible. If you lose, you lose - get on with life. I don't know any single team in the history of any sport that chooses to put itself down and attribute failure to an event that occurred in 1918...

So in your reckoning which approach is better - graciously accepting defeat, as the Yankees have done or whining, bemoaning and rioting all over Boston as the Red Sox fans have every year they've lost? It's just a game not the end of the world. Trust me, we Indians know all about bitter, age-old rivalries - I'm a fervent cricket fan and watch India play Pakistan; it's a WAR that is played out for days before and after a match between the two countries. But if India loses, I don't blame anyone except the team. Can a Red Sox fan actually do that?

I'll own up and accept that I was nervous too - the Red Sox seemed to be possessed. Prognostications are based on past record - and the Red Sox have a history of choking that would cover pages and pages of content - so don't you be picking on the Yankees for choking. I've said enough about the curse of the Bambino but if you are a true Red Sox fan, stop "jinxing" your team's fortunes and just pray that the Red Sox can re-create their magic in the World Series. It ain't over yet for you guys - yet. As has been displayed by the Sox, it ain't over until the last pitch is thrown...

  6. Honestly, I don't care who wins - the Yankees are out - if the Boston Red Soxs win, the fans of the team can finally put the "CURSE" theory to rest and start questioning their team's abilities when it loses. Closure is good...
